I park outside Staines cemetery.

“The cemetery?” Ben asks. “Seriously?”

“What’s wrong with the cemetery?”

“What’s not wrong with it? Do you know how many nasty things live in cemeteries?”

“Are they as nasty as vampires?”

“They’re a hell of a lot more nasty.”

“Then please educate me, because I don’t know anything about creatures that are nastier than vampires.”

“Well, there are ghosts—”

“Yes, I’m aware of that, since we’re here to see a ghost.”

“And ghouls… And I think maybe succubus live here, too. Is it succubi, for the plural?”

“You’re asking the wrong girl—I flunked English at school. In fact, I flunked all subjects at school.”

“In any case, it doesn’t matter. There are other things, as well, like…”

“You don’t actually know, do you?”

“I know enough to know that hanging out in cemeteries is like sticking your hands in a bucket full of creepy crawlies.”

I reach across and do the special jiggle to unbuckle his seatbelt for him. “That’s a bit rich, coming from the equivalent of a cockroach.”

Ben gapes at me. “Did you seriously just compare me to a cockroach?”

“Only because you compared other supernatural creatures to creepy crawlies. You’re not that much different or superior to them.”

“And how would you know? I’m the first supernatural you’ve met.”

“Actually, you’re the second,” I reply smugly.

Ben gets out of the car in a huff while I help Penelope to come out, grabbing her leash so she doesn’t run off.

“I am definitely much better than whatever creepers haunt the cemetery,” he snaps.

“Well, actually if you think about it, ghosts are the best in terms of karma and all that, since they don’t eat any food. The ultimate vegans. So yeah, in that respect, ghosts are superior to you.”

That stumps him enough that he follows me into the cemetery without any more protests.

Once inside, I latch the gate closed and then unsnap Penelope’s leash. The cemetery is enclosed, so she can’t get out, and this will give her another opportunity to stretch her legs and sniff around. Get the outdoor time she can’t get during the day. And, if I’m lucky, she might do her business out here, rather than back in the house. I don’t see it as being disrespectful to the people buried here, rather it’s like I’ve come with a fertiliser distributing machine for the plants and grass growing in the cemetery.

And who doesn’t love fertiliser?

“So where is this ghost, then?” Ben asks.

“At the other end, over there.” I point.

“You mean the patch of weeds?”

“The very one. Oh, I just realised—I forgot something. Hold on.”

I hurry back to the car, grab the amulet from the glove compartment, and return to Ben’s side.

“What’s that?”

“It’s an amulet to help me see ghosts. Souls that are still lingering in this world when they should have crossed over into the underworld. Charon gave it to me so I could bring some of these souls back to him. I’m basically on probation. If I can bring him back one soul, then I’ve got the job. And it pays really well, which I’m going to need to look after Penelope.
